At least 50 killed as train runs over Dussehra revellers in India’s Punjab

At least 50 people were killed and dozens other injured after a train ran into a crowd watching Dussehra celebrations at Amritsar in Punjab, the Indian media have reported.

The accident occurred at Dhobi Ghat near Jaura Phatak level-crossing around 6:45pm on Friday, according to the Hindustan Times newspaper.

A crowd of around 300 people was watching and shooting videos of a Ravana effigy burn when the train came, it quoted a senior police officer as saying.

They could not hear the train coming as the whole area resonated with the sound of crackers at the time.
A magistrate confirmed the death toll of 50 to PTI.

NDTV said it received conflicting reports. Some claim that two trains came from opposite directions, leaving little chance for the people to move.
